A quick update on my dad. It's been a while since I've given one. He's been at home since before Christmas. He has been seeing between 1 and 3 therapists a day during the week. I'm not sure what the start date was for that. The therapists that he is seeing is for speech, occupational, and physical therapies.
He is able to get around the house pretty well now. He needs some help getting from the bed into his wheel chair. He can maneuver himself around all the obstacles in the house and over the carpet by himself. Yesterday, I walked with him around the first floor of the house, with only a light hand on the support belt around his waist, to catch him, if he lost balance. I didn't realize he could get to and from the toilet on his own, with only a watching eye, until I saw my mom keeping a watchful eye, from near by while he scooted back and forth on his own. Up until then, I had been keeping my hand on his belt while he scooted, and he never told me he didn't need me to help. My mom does help him more, later in the day when he is getting tired. On our little walk around the first floor, we ended up at the bottom of the stairs. When I asked if he wanted to go upstairs, my mom quickly said the therapists weren't allowing him to do that yet. I think my dad was being naughty and trying to do more than he is allowed.
The conversations we're having are getting better. He is having less difficulty saying the words he wants to say. Occassionally, he'll get stuck saying words that don't make any sense in the context that he is trying to use them.
He has a hernia. He thinks he has had it for for about 6 months now, and hasn't done anything about it. They were going to fix it surgically, but now, they are going to wait until either he is off of coumadin or it becomes a medical necessity for them to repair it.
That's it for now. Check back later for more.
